The Official Section is the highest competitive category in the festival, created in 2011’s edition. Films participating in this section must relate to the festival’s topic: Travel and Creation. This year the official section is made up of three categories: feature film, debute film and short film, each one awarded with a 4,500, 3,000 and 1,500 euro prize respectively.

IBAFF was set up in 2010 as an Honorary Award to be given to a film personality (Majid Majidi was awarded in that year) with a particular way of understanding the cinema and in line with the ideals of Travel and Creation (Viaje y Creación). In the 2011 Edition, the award was given to the Oscar award-winning theoretician and Italian director of photography Vittorio Storaro. In the third edition of the festival, the career of the Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami was recognized. In 2013, the Honorary Award was given ex aequo to the scriptwriter Jean-Claude Carrière and to the French magazine Trafic. The 2014 Honorary Award is going to be presented to the Cinemateca Portuguesa.

The IBAFF Youth Award is given by a Jury formed by students from secondary schools of the Region of Murcia. The award will be presented to one of the short films taken from the different sections of the festival.

Fostering a didactic project with a European dimension in which teachers from educational institutions work on the value of the new technologies and communication media as tools of personal and artistic development is the reason for the direct involvement of these students. From the IBAFF, we support this project about cinema which offers the education: increasing sensitivity, knowledge of the audio visual world, training of critical audiences, and people prepared to watch and value it.

The audience, with their scorings after the viewing of each film in the Official Section, decides the film which will receive this award from all of those submitted in the Official Section.
